Making a lifestyle change is always difficult at first, but can feel especially challenging for folks who've been eating a Standard American Diet for decades. And we get it; it can feel like you're up against a lifestyle of habits, taste preferences, and cooking skills. The good news is, it's never too late to reap the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. Our tastebuds (and even DNA!) actually change when we go plant based, regardless of age!
In fact, many of the chronic conditions that so many seniors live with can be alleviated and even reversed with a plant-based diet.
The benefits of eating this way – at any age – include:
"What's in your food that made my joint pain go away?" - Claudia, MamaSezz Customer
Claudia, it's both what's in our food, just as much as what's NOT in our food that made your join pain go away. A high antioxidant diet, filled with fiber and nutrients versus one filled with saturated fats and cholesterol is sure to make a difference. One is an anti-inflammatory diet and the other is an inflammatory diet, also known as the Standard American Diet (SAD).
Here are three real life stories about some amazing folks who made a lifestyle change later in life, and reaped the benefits. No regrets here!
Let's start out with our favorite story. Why is it our favorite you ask? Because Millie was actually the inspiration behind MamaSezz!
1) Millie's Story: Reversing Congestive Heart Failure
Millie went from 10 percent heart function and not being able to stand on her own, to thriving in her 90s. Today, Millie has normal heart function, plays with her grandkids, does yoga and swims frequently, and continues to be the social butterfly that she is. Let's agree to all be more like Millie.
2) Carolyn's Story: 4 Autoimmune Diseases and off all her meds
After going plant-based, Carolyn went off all of her medication, some of which she had been on for 40+ years. Her doctor was in shock at her blood work and said it was the best he's seen from her in 15 years. This was all while Carolyn was starting fresh after a divorce from a 40-year marriage, taking care of her 90 year old father, and aging brother with Down Syndrome.
This superhero's inflammation went down so much that she actually dropped a shoe size. She didn't let Colitis, Chronic Lyme, Hypothyroidism or Lupus hold her back. She took charge of her life in her mid 60s, and just turned 66. She feels better than ever.
3. Bob's Story: This world champion tennis player wasn't about to let age shake his game
Bob decided to go plant based after noticing that aging was affecting his game. Bob is the former number one tennis player in the world in his age group, and is currently one of the top players in the United States- and a member of the United States Senior Davis Cup Team.
After going plant based he noticed decreased recovery times, more endurance, stronger muscles, and less muscle pain. Bob's blood pressure is returning to normal and his mental clarity is off the charts. He continues to compete and sends us frequent updates!
So what happened?
These three senior superstars really said, "this isn't working for me" and did a 180. It's not every day you get a chance to enhance and change your life forever, so it's important to understand that a fresh start is possible for anyone, at any age.
All three of these individuals ate a "healthy diet" by Standard American terms prior to their plant based transformation. That means plenty of fruits and veggies with their low fat dairy and white meat and fish. It wasn't working for them, and they refused to just go along with it.
