Successful weight loss: Richard lost 150 pounds, and reversed high blood pressure

This week, we're talking with Richard Hubbard who suffered from morbid obesity, along with many other related conditions including high blood pressure. At his peak, he was 350 pounds, so he knew he needed to make a change. After he was prescribed medication for his high BP, Robert decided to try to lower his blood pressure naturally with diet and lifestyle. That's when his life changed forever. 


What was your life like before your successful weight loss journey?


I was living on the standard American diet, hardly ever touching a vegetable. The horrible diet definitely took a toll on my health. I found out I was pre-hypertensive and pre-diabetic at a physical, that being the first time I saw a doctor since before college. I was also morbidly obese, having tipped the scales at over 350 pounds.

What happened?

I did not want to go on meds to lower my blood pressure. People, like my parents, relied heavily on meds without any hope of getting off of the prescriptions. Certainly, I did not want to go down that path.
I made a deal with my doctor, if my blood pressure can come down on it’s own in 6 months, I can skip the meds. I started to do my research online about healthy diets and began eliminating foods like red meat and aspartame.

How were you able to stick with such a dramatic diet change?

I happened to catch an episode of Dr. Oz with Dr. Joel Fuhrman as a guest. It changed my life. Dr. Fuhrman spoke of reversing heart disease, etc. through plant based foods. I became a healthy eater ever since then and purchased several of Dr. Fuhrman’s books.



What is your life like now that you've achieved weight loss on a plant-based diet?

My life is completely different than it was in 2011. I ended up losing over 150 pounds and kept it off. Weekly, I workout 5 days, having completed two half marathons in 2019 and 2020.

I also wrote my first book, as I am often advising others how to lose weight. I figured I needed to do a book to help motivate others.


What are you most proud of besides your own successful weight loss?

I am most proud of the fact that I can inspire others to change for the better. I helped my mom reverse her diabetes and am currently helping a friend lose weight with a plant based diet.


If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be?

As far as who I would love to have lunch with, I have to say my idol Dr. Fuhrman, beacuase I learn something new every time I hear him talk!
